It is estimated that 2-5% of the UK population live with hoarding issues – equivalent to 1.2 million households. Hoarding is a recognised mental illness, often originating from childhood experiences, for example living in poverty or emotional or/ physical abuse.
There are three types of hoarding:
- Inanimate objects – clothes, newspapers, containers etc, this is the most common form of hoarding.
- Wet hoarding – from bodily functions, mainly urine & faeces.
- Animal hoarding – often with the inability to provide minimal standards of care to the animals. Homes are eventually destroyed by the accumulation of animal faeces and infestation of insects.
